TrellisLearning — User Journey Guide
This guide follows real users through their complete experiences in TrellisLearning.
Overview
TrellisLearning has two user personas:
| Persona | Who | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Parent | The grown-up | Create activities, manage rewards, track points |
| Child | Your kid | Complete activities, earn ⭐, redeem rewards |
Both journeys start at the same place — the landing page — then split into completely separate paths.
1. The Parent Journey
Step 1 — Landing page
- Open the TrellisLearning URL in your browser.
- You'll see a warm, colorful page with a heading and two big buttons:
- "I'm a Parent" (blue) — for grown-ups.
- "I'm a Kid" (purple) — for children.
- Tap "I'm a Parent".
Tip: If it's your first visit, a welcome banner above the buttons walks you through three quick steps: create your family, make your first activity, and share the code with your kid. You can dismiss it anytime.
Step 2 — Sign in with Google or Amazon
- Choose Continue with Google or Sign in with Amazon.
- Sign in (or pick your account) in the pop-up window.
- You'll be redirected back to TrellisLearning.
Note: You can sign in with either Google or Amazon — both work. You only need one account.
Step 3 — COPPA consent (first time only)
If you're signing in for the very first time, you'll see a screen titled "Before we begin":
- Read the summary about how your child's information is handled:
- Only limited info is collected (name, grade level, progress).
- Data is never sold; kids never see ads.
- You control and can delete everything.
- Check the box: "I am the parent or legal guardian and I consent…"
- Tap "I Agree & Continue".
This consent is recorded for your family's records.
Step 4 — Name your family
- Type a family name (e.g. "The Johnsons").
- Tap Continue.
Step 5 — Add your first child
- Enter your child's first name.
- Pick their grade level:
- Elementary (1st–3rd)
- Middle (4th–6th)
- Upper Middle (7th–9th)
- High School (10th–12th)
- Create a child PIN — 4 to 6 digits. Keep it secret from other kids!
- Tap "Finish Setup".
🎉 You'll see a "You're all set!" screen. Tap "Go to Dashboard" to start.
Tip: You can add more children later from within your account.
Step 6 — The Parent Dashboard
Your dashboard is your family's control center. Here's what you'll see:
| Section | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Family code 🔑 | A 6-character code (e.g. 7K2M9P) that your kids use to log in. Click to copy or read it aloud. |
| My family | Family roster and child-management actions. |
| Points Ledger | The selected child's balance and every point earned or spent, newest first. |
| Activity Library | Cards for every approved activity — title, points, estimated time, difficulty, tags. |
| Starter Credits | Enabled Generation V2 families see the available generation balance and displayed cost before requesting a preview. |
Quick-link buttons at the top: + New Activity, Rewards, Approvals, Messages, Log out.
Step 7 — Create an activity
- Click + New Activity (or navigate to
/parent/activities/new).
#### Choosing a content type
At the top, pick one of two options:
- Math Quiz — a multiple-choice quiz on any math topic (addition, fractions, etc.).
- Reading Comprehension — an informational passage followed by comprehension questions.
#### Setting parameters
- Topic — type a keyword (
addition, ancient Egypt, weather). - Grade Level — pick the band that fits your child.
- Difficulty — drag the slider (1 = easiest, 5 = hardest).
- Questions — drag the slider (1 to 20). An estimated time hint updates as you move it.
- Points — enter 1–100. After generation, this is pre-filled with the AI's suggestion, but you can change it.
#### Generation cost, draft, and review
- If Generation V2 is enabled, confirm the Starter Credits balance and displayed cost. The Free seed is five non-renewing credits.
- Tap Generate Activity. Retries/double-clicks with the same request are charged at most once.
- Wait a few seconds while the service builds a server-owned preview.
- Review the draft:
- Title and instructions.
- For Reading Comprehension: a passage your child will read.
- Questions — the correct answer is highlighted in green so you can verify.
- Suggested points and estimated time.
#### Approving or regenerating
- "Approve & Save to Library" — approves the opaque server preview and saves a family-owned activity.
- "Reject" — declines the usable preview; its displayed generation charge remains.
- "Regenerate" — rejects the current enforced preview, then requests and meters a fresh draft with the same parameters. Failures that produce no usable preview release their reservation.
Tip: Every activity must be approved by you before your child can see it. AI drafts are never auto-published.
Step 8 — Schedule an activity for your child
- From the dashboard, click a child's name in the Children row.
- In the Activity Library, find the activity you want to assign.
- Tap "Schedule for today".
You'll see a confirmation ("Scheduled for today!") and the activity will appear on your child's Today screen.
Step 9 — Review rewards and approve requests
When your child redeems a reward that requires approval:
- Click Approvals from your dashboard.
- You'll see each pending request: reward icon/name, child, ⭐ cost, and when it was requested.
- Tap Approve to deduct points and fulfill the reward, or Deny to turn it down.
- Nothing pending? You'll see "You're all caught up!"
Step 10 — Message your child
- Click Messages from your dashboard.
- Pick the child you want to chat with.
- Type a message and hit Send, or tap a sticker button (🌟 🎉 💪 ❤️ 👍 🏆 😊 👏).
Your child sees your messages on their 💬 Messages screen. They can reply with text (safety-checked) or stickers.
2. The Child Journey
Step 1 — Landing page
- Your child opens TrellisLearning in their browser.
- They tap "I'm a Kid".
Step 2 — Find the family
- A grown-up enters the family's parent/guardian email and taps "Find my family".
- The child then selects their avatar/name and enters their PIN.
- Use family code remains available as the migration path for the older 6-character code flow.
Step 3 — Pick who they are
- They see each family member as a card with an animal avatar (🦊 🐻 🦁 🐰 🐼…).
- They tap their own name.
Step 4 — Enter their PIN
- They type the 4–6 digit PIN you set up.
- Tap Go.
Heads up: If the wrong PIN is entered too many times, they'll have to wait a while before trying again. This is the app keeping things safe.
And they're in! 🚀
Step 5 — Today's Quests
Your child lands on "Today's Quests 🚀" — their personal list of activities for the day.
| What they see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Activity card with title + ⭐ points | This is assigned to them for today. |
| Start button on each card | Tap to open and begin the activity. |
| Green "✓ Completed (+pts)" badge | This activity is already done. |
| "Nothing scheduled for today" | No activities yet — ask a grown-up to schedule one! |
Step 6 — Playing an activity
#### Math Quiz
- Read each question.
- Tap the answer you think is right.
- Answer all questions (every one needs a selection).
- Tap Submit.
#### Reading Comprehension
- Read the passage — an informational text is displayed first (title + text).
- Answer the comprehension questions below it.
- Tap Submit.
Step 7 — Results
After submitting, your child sees a celebration screen:
- 🎉 "Great job!"
- Score — e.g. "You got 4 out of 5 right (80%)."
- "⭐ +X points!" — points are added to their balance immediately.
Tap "Back to Today" to keep going.
Step 8 — Rewards and Messages
From the Today screen, your child has three buttons:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| 🎁 Rewards | Browse rewards, see balance, redeem (instant or approval-required). |
| 💬 Messages | Chat with you (the parent). Type text or send stickers (🌟 🎉 💪 ❤️ 👍 😊 🙏 🏆). |
| Log out | Return to the landing page for the next person. |
Note: Messages from kids are automatically safety-checked. If a message contains inappropriate words or personal info, it won't be sent — your child sees a friendly explanation.
3. The Family Code — How It Works
The family code is the bridge between parent and child:
| Role | How they use it |
|---|---|
| Parent | Found on the dashboard — a 6-character code like 7K2M9P. Read it aloud or copy it. |
| Child | Enter it on the kid login page to find their family. |
Tips for sharing
- Say it out loud — the code avoids confusing characters (no 0, 1, I, or O).
- Write it down — a sticky note near the device is a common setup.
- Keep it handy — your kids will ask for it every time they want to log in!
